  • Contest ends Saturday, July 6, 2024 (contest extended by 1 day to July 6 due to technical issues preventing players from logging in)

  • Server version is 1.20.4
  • Map: map.buildersrefuge.com

Information

  • Plots will be 301×301
    • For some structure builders, 301×301 sounds massive. This size was intentionally selected and will introduce a particular challenge both for builders who build large and small in relation to the theme
    • You can claim up to 2 plots, however only one plot will be graded and the other plot can be used for asset construction and experimentation
    • You can use /plot flag set greeting <text> if you wish to write or link to a short backstory for your build to assist with judging (optional)
    • You do not have to utilize the entire plot
  • Organics, terrain, and other non-structural additions to your build will not be considered for grading
  • This is a solo contest
  • Contest builds must be completely made on the contest server. You are not allowed to import models. Anyone caught importing models will be disqualified and banned for cheating.

Judges

Given the complexity of grading, please allow up to several weeks for preparation, judging, and determination of winners. Updates will be posted in Builder’s Refuge Discord #announcements channel.

Prizes

Best in Show Prizes

  • First Place – $600
  • Second Place – $300
  • Third Place – $100

Judging Criteria for Best in Show Prizes

Judges will give a score from 1 to 10 points in each category. The scores of all judges’ category points will be averaged together. Then all 3 scores for each participant will be averaged together for a composite score representing the rank of the build for Best in Show.

  • Aesthetics (10 points) – Are physical properties in proportion (or appropriately abstract)? Do the coloring and texturing accentuate the build? Does the creative use of items and entities represent the details intended? Quite simply… does the build look good?
  • Complexity (10 points) – A value of Complexity is determined considering the technical difficulty of the build. Is symmetry (and asymmetry) handled well? Are the components of the build well made and positioned? Is adequate build area and height utilized? Are interiors completed? This is the synthesis of skill and practice in joining multiple components of a build together in a cohesive way.
  • Originality (10 points) – An Originality score is proportional to uniqueness of the build and adherence to the contest theme. Over time there are many techniques that work well and are used by many builders, but if you risk trying something novel it may be rewarded with a higher score in this category.

Category Prizes

Each category will be judged on a 1 to 10 point scale based on what the build represents for each category. The scores will be averaged for each category to determine the category prize winner. Category scores will not contribute to the composite score to determine overall ranking.
